Q: What’s the difference between latex and nitrile gloves?

A: While both offer strong protection and are widely used across workplaces, latex and nitrile gloves differ in material, performance, and allergy considerations:

  • Material:

    • Latex gloves are made from natural rubber.

    • Nitrile gloves are made from synthetic rubber compounds (nitrile butadiene), offering a latex-free alternative.

  • Allergy Concerns:
Latex is known to trigger allergic reactions in some individuals—especially those with prolonged exposure (e.g. healthcare workers).
Nitrile is hypoallergenic, making it the safer choice in allergy-sensitive environments.

  • Fit and Flexibility:
Latex gloves are incredibly elastic, offering a “second skin” fit and excellent tactile sensitivity.
Nitrile gloves have improved significantly over the years and now provide similar flexibility with greater resistance to punctures.

  • Chemical Resistance:
Nitrile gloves outperform latex when it comes to chemical and oil resistance. They’re the glove of choice for mechanics, industrial cleaning, and lab environments where solvents or hazardous materials are in use.

  • Durability:
Nitrile is more puncture-resistant and generally lasts longer in tough conditions. Latex, while durable, is better suited for lower-abrasion tasks that require finesse and sensitivity.

  • Environmental Impact:
Latex gloves (especially natural, biodegradable varieties) are often more eco-friendly.
Nitrile gloves are synthetic and not biodegradable—though newer formulations are starting to include biodegradable options.

  • Use Cases:

    • Latex gloves are ideal for healthcare, food service (powder-free), and light-duty cleaning.

    • Nitrile gloves are preferred for automotive work, laboratories, chemical handling, and any situation where strength and protection outweigh the need for ultra-fine dexterity.
